On October 14, the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) held a webinar designed to scope out challenges associated with racism in health care and efforts to deal with this systemic problem.
Attendees had the opportunity to hear diverse perspectives from our experts (Dr. Janet Smylie, Dr. Javeed Sukhera, Dr. Arno Kumagai), offering common messages:
- humility is essential to learn from each other
- start with ourselves and our circles – we do not need to look far to make a difference
- we must acknowledge, contextualize, learn from existing evidence and work collaboratively to generate new knowledge
- we need to focus on actions to ensure equity and incorporate holistic assessment to confirm the impact of these actions
The Academy is committed to contributing to anti-racism in health care. This marks the beginning in an important journey, one the Academy wishes to take with all Fellows.
If you were unable to attend the webinar, we invite you to view the discussion here.
